What Brooklyn learners can choose from

Our Brooklyn list has seven schools, and four of them are based in the borough. Coreway teaches on Zoom and keeps offices at 26 Court Street and 590B New York Ave. Drive Rite Academy NY runs Zoom classes plus a self-paced course. Image Driving School, in Canarsie, is the only school in our entire ranking with a classroom session. Super Starz teaches from Bay Ridge. The three booking sites round out the list with live online classes that serve every borough.

Prices stay between $40 and $50 across the group, with Image at $45. When the money is that close, format, class times and certificate handling decide the choice.

Classroom in Canarsie or Zoom from home

If you learn better in a room, Image is the answer. Its classroom sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 3 PM at 9621 Flatlands Ave, and the school’s page says walk-ins are acceptable. The price is $45, and the certificate is ready the next business day.

For everyone else, the question is whether the ride is worth it. A Zoom class swaps the commute for a screen. Image runs Zoom on its other days and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and the remaining Brooklyn schools here teach online only. Image’s Zoom rules are firm: camera and microphone on, a quiet place rather than a car or a workplace, and all five hours, with no credit for a class you only partly attend.

Fitting the class around school and work

Brooklyn schools publish a lot of start times. Match the slot to your week:

When you are freeWhat to look at
Weekday daytimeImage classroom or Zoom, Tuesday to Thursday; Drive Rite blocks at 10–3 and 12–5
After work or schoolCoreway and the booking sites on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM; Drive Rite 5–10 PM; Image on Wednesday and Thursday evenings
SaturdayCoreway and the booking sites at 1:00 PM; Drive Rite; Super Starz when enough students ask
SundaySuper Starz from 10 AM to 3 PM; the Spanish class at Coreway and the booking sites on select Sundays at 3:00 PM

Coreway’s schedule shows 5 to 12 seats per class, so a small group is the trade for a fixed date. Drive Rite’s four time blocks on most days make it the easiest to fit around a changing shift.

Collecting the MV-278 in Brooklyn

Three Brooklyn schools let you pick up the paper certificate. Coreway issues it the next business day and offers either mail or collection at 590B New York Ave. Drive Rite mails it for $5 or lets you collect it at 594 Dean Street. Image asks you to sign and collect it at the Canarsie office.

Pickup saves the wait for the mail, which takes one to two weeks by standard post at Coreway, but it costs you a trip. Super Starz does not say how its certificate is delivered. The booking sites state that the MV-278 is issued after you complete the class, so ask how it will reach you.

Spanish and other languages in Brooklyn

Coreway and the three booking sites teach a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, and Coreway names a bilingual instructor for it. Coreway’s office staff also speak Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish, which can help a family member who handles the paperwork.

Drive Rite, Image and Super Starz do not state the language of their classes. Ask before you pay, since the DMV requires a school that teaches in a language other than English to say so.

Choosing between the Brooklyn schools

A short guide, based only on what each school publishes:

  • You want a room and a teacher in front of you. Image is the one classroom in the ranking, at $45.
  • You want a flat price and plenty of dates. The three booking sites charge $40 with three English classes a week, and Coreway adds its Brooklyn offices and road test extras.
  • Your hours change from week to week. Drive Rite offers four daily time blocks, and adults 18 and older can instead take its self-paced course, which is run by Online Traffic Safety and costs the same $50.
  • You live near Bay Ridge and prefer Sundays. Super Starz teaches on Zoom from 10 AM to 3 PM and asks you to upload your permit or ID before you pay.

None of these choices is locked in. Coreway allows free rescheduling with at least 24 hours’ notice, and Image asks for the same notice, so read each school’s change policy before you pay.

After the class: booking the road test

Brooklyn learners can buy the next step from the same school. Coreway sells appointment booking at $20 or $70 rush, a car for the test at $110 and packages of $230 to $585 that add one to eight 45-minute lessons. The three booking sites charge $25 or $75 rush for booking and $115 for the car.

If you book directly with the DMV instead, you choose a test site near the ZIP code you enter and take the earliest slot you are offered, usually 3 to 5 weeks away. Bring the original MV-278 and your permit, and read the DMV’s road test preparation page for the rest of the list. Our comparison page shows how the extras line up.
