Who publishes this site
5HR Course Rating is run by a small team based in New York that works in driver education. Part of that work is with course providers: the publisher works with Coreway Driving School and the three course booking sites listed here, 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. The other nine schools in the ranking have no arrangement with us.
We are not the New York State DMV and we are not connected to it. We are also not a driving school. You cannot enroll through this site, because every booking happens on the provider’s own website.
Why the site exists
Most new drivers in New York have to take the 5-hour course before a road test, and the information they need to choose a class sits on a dozen different websites. The DMV’s course page lists no prices and sends you to the schools, and the schools publish different amounts of detail.
Published prices in our ranking run from $38 to $65. Some schools say which languages they teach in and how the certificate reaches you, and some do not. A learner comparing them one tab at a time is likely to miss something that matters, such as a card fee, an age limit on the online course or a certificate that has to be collected in person.
This site puts those facts side by side, scores them on criteria we publish, and gives each borough its own page. It is written for New York City learners and for the parents of teen drivers, many of whom are choosing a course for the first time, and it is available in English and Spanish.
How we handle the schools we work with
Those four schools hold the top four places in the ranking, so you should weigh that fact when you read the order. Here are their review pages: Coreway Driving School, 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course.
Their scores come from the same six criteria as everyone else’s: a published price, a live online class, English and Spanish, several class dates a week, online booking and road test help. We ask you to verify instead of trusting us. Every price, schedule and language in the tables comes from a public provider website, and each review links straight to it.
None of the other nine providers has paid to be listed, and none can buy a higher position.
What we publish and what we leave out
Course rules on this site come from the DMV’s own pages, and we link to them where we cite a rule. Provider details come from the providers’ public websites. When the two disagree on a rule, the DMV wins; when they differ on a price or a date, the provider’s page wins. We publish prices, class times, formats, languages, certificate delivery and road test services.
We leave out anything we cannot verify. You will not find student counts, pass rates, years in business, testimonials or customer star ratings here. Scores are our editorial assessment, not customer ratings, and the how we rate page explains the weights behind them.
How corrections work
Prices and class dates change often, and we will sometimes be out of date. A provider that spots an error can ask us to fix it by contacting us through any of the four schools named above. We then check the fact against the provider’s own website and update the page if the site confirms it.
A correction to a fact can move a score. A request to move a score without a new fact cannot. Readers who find a mismatch can treat the provider’s current website as the authority and tell the school, and we re-check every listing each month in any case.
Where to go next
If you are choosing a class now, start with the full ranking or the side-by-side comparison. If you already know your borough, the borough guides linked in the footer narrow the list to the schools that matter there.
Disclosure:
this site is published by a team that also works with Coreway Driving School and the course booking sites 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. Scores are our own editorial assessment, and the facts in every table come from the providers’ public websites, so you can check them before you pay.
No other school listed here has any arrangement with us, and none of them paid to be listed.
