Best 5-Hour Course in Manhattan

Manhattan’s two ranked schools both teach on Zoom, at $60 and $65, so the real question is what a daily schedule or a Spanish class is worth next to a flat $40.

Manhattan’s two ranked schools

New York Auto School has its Manhattan office at 369 Lexington Ave, Suite 309, and further locations in Westchester. It teaches the 5-hour class live on Zoom on weekdays and weekends, in English and in Spanish, for $65. The Zoom link is emailed to you.

Grand Prix Driving School sits on the Upper East Side, at 806 Lexington Ave, and charges $60 with no hidden fees. Its class is a live Zoom session with a live instructor, offered most days of the week in the morning and in the evening. It holds no quizzes or final exam, though it expects your camera on for the whole session.

Both schools are priced well above the $40 that Coreway and the three booking sites advertise, a premium of $20 to $25. The question for a Manhattan learner is whether the schedule or the language justifies it.

Why the office address matters less than the schedule

Neither Manhattan school asks you to come in for the class itself, because both teach it live online. The Lexington Avenue addresses matter if you want to speak to someone in person or deal with paperwork, not for sitting the course. The same is true of the schools at the top of the table: Coreway’s two offices are in Brooklyn, and its class is on Zoom.

That changes how a Manhattan learner should compare. Travel time drops out, and what remains is the start time, the price and what arrives afterwards. Grand Prix asks you to upload your permit at registration and to use a Zoom name that matches it.

Daily classes versus fixed dates

The calendar is where the two Manhattan schools differ most. Grand Prix offers morning and evening classes across most of the week. New York Auto School describes weekday and weekend classes but does not list start times on the pages we reviewed.

Against that, the top four run three English classes a week at fixed times: Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM. If one of those suits you, you pay $20 to $25 less. If your job leaves only a morning free, or a day when none of those three dates works, Grand Prix is the school with a published morning session.

Free changes also differ. Grand Prix lets you cancel or reschedule free with at least 24 hours’ notice, as Coreway does for rescheduling. New York Auto School charges in full for late cancellations under its 24-hour policy, so confirm the date before you pay.

Spanish in Manhattan

New York Auto School is the one Manhattan school that states Spanish classes, which lists classes in Spanish. Grand Prix does not state the language of its class. For a lower price, Coreway and the three booking sites run a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, at $40 or from $40.

A Spanish class is the same state course and gives the same MV-278. If you need a weekday Spanish class, New York Auto School is the likelier fit; for a Sunday afternoon, the cheaper option is the Sunday class.

Choosing between the two Manhattan schools

The published facts point to a short rule of thumb:

  • Pick New York Auto School if a weekday or weekend Spanish class matters, if you want road test scheduling included, and if $65 is acceptable.
  • Pick Grand Prix if you need a morning or evening session, prefer a format with no exam, and want a price that is stated to carry no hidden fees.
  • Look at the top four first if cost is the priority. Their classes cost $20 to $25 less, and they run on Zoom just as the Manhattan schools do.

Whichever you pick, confirm the next available date on the school’s own page before you pay, since dates move faster than our monthly check.

Where the MV-278 goes after the class

Both Manhattan schools mail the certificate to the address on your permit: Grand Prix the next day, New York Auto School the next business day. That is fast, but it assumes the permit address is one where you can receive mail. If you have moved, sort that out with the DMV before the class.

Coreway issues its certificate the next business day too, and sends it by standard mail in one to two weeks or by expedited delivery; you can also collect it at 590B New York Ave in Brooklyn. The three booking sites state that the MV-278 is issued once you complete the class.

Road test help from a Manhattan school

New York Auto School offers free road test scheduling with the class, which is a real saving: Coreway charges $20, or $70 rush, for booking, and the three booking sites charge $25, or $75 rush. A car for the test costs $110 at Coreway and $115 at the booking sites.

Drivers under 18 must wait six months after getting the permit and bring the signed MV-262. Everyone can book directly with the DMV by phone at 1-518-402-2100, and the DMV’s road test page explains the rest. Our how we rate page shows how these extras count toward a score.
