What Staten Island learners can choose from
Two schools in our ranking have an office on the island, and both teach the 5-hour class live on Zoom. Super Starz Auto Driving School has an office at 97 New Dorp Plaza and a second one in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Alyaa Driving School is on Clove Road. Each charges $50 for the class on its own.
Beyond them, the four schools at the top of the table, Coreway, 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course, serve Staten Island online from $40. One more option sits outside our ranking: an island-based company on the DMV’s list of online providers, covered below.
New Dorp: the Sunday class at Super Starz
Super Starz runs its class every Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM and adds Saturday sessions on demand, so call if Saturday is your only free day. The instructor teaches live, and the price is $50.
The school explains its checkout step by step. You upload your permit or ID, confirm the details the system reads from it and sign the contract before you pay. A passport is not accepted as ID, and a paper permit is accepted only when you also show a New York State photo ID. Have those documents ready before you open the form.
Two answers are missing from the page: which language the class uses, and how the MV-278 is delivered. A phone call to the New Dorp office can settle both.
Clove Road: Alyaa’s class and package
Alyaa lists a 5-hour Zoom class for $50. The same class forms part of the school’s BASIC package at $225, which adds a 30-minute lesson, a car for the road test and road test scheduling. If you were going to buy a lesson and a test car anyway, the package puts them in one purchase with the class.
The school’s page does not publish class dates, the language of the 5-hour class or how the certificate is delivered. Its driving lessons are taught in English, Arabic and Spanish, but that does not tell you the language of the class, so ask. Because no dates are listed, the first question to put to the school is when the next class runs.
A self-paced option based on the island
National Traffic Safety Institute is based on Staten Island and appears on the DMV’s list of online providers. Its self-paced course costs $44.95 and is offered in English and Spanish. We do not rate it in this ranking, but it is worth knowing about if you are an adult with a plastic photo learner permit and no fixed evening free.
The same limits apply as for every online course. You must be 18 or older, junior permit holders are excluded, and you receive no paper MV-278, since the company reports your completion to the DMV. Confirm the price and the 30-day window on the school’s own site.
Spanish on Staten Island
Spanish speakers have three routes. Coreway and the booking sites run a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, which gives you a live instructor from $40, against $50 at the two island schools. National Traffic Safety Institute offers its self-paced course in English and Spanish, for adults only. Alyaa teaches lessons in Spanish but does not say which language the 5-hour class uses, and Super Starz does not state its class language either.
If you rely on Spanish, ask the school to confirm the language in writing before you pay. The DMV requires a course taught in a language other than English to say so, and a Spanish class ends with the same MV-278 as an English one.
Live online classes without leaving the island
If you would rather not rely on a single Sunday, the live online classes at the top of the table offer more dates. English classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM, and a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. You attend from home, so no trip off the island is involved.
The booking sites charge a flat $40, with no extra charge for the certificate. At Coreway the headline is from $40, some dates are $50 and card payments add 2.9%, though its certificate arrives by standard mail in one to two weeks, with expedited delivery available at checkout. Compare the dates on the comparison page before you choose.
Which Staten Island option fits which learner
- You can only study on Sundays. Super Starz is the island school built around that day.
- You want the class, a lesson and a test car in a single purchase. Alyaa’s $225 package covers all three.
- You are an adult who cannot commit to a date. The self-paced course from the island-based company fits, with its limits.
- You want the lowest price and the most dates. Use the top four on the ranking, from $40.
Planning the road test from the island
Once you hold the certificate, book the road test with the DMV online or by phone at 1-518-402-2100. The DMV says the earliest appointments are usually three to five weeks out and can run to ten weeks at busy times, so start as soon as your paperwork is in order. If you fail, you must wait at least 14 days before trying again.
Alyaa’s package includes a car for the test, and Coreway and the booking sites sell one separately, at $110 and $115. Drivers under 18 should plan around the six-month wait and the signed MV-262. The DMV’s road test page sets out the full list of requirements.
