The Bronx options in brief
Bronx Driving School, at 1213 Castle Hill Ave, is the only Bronx-based school in the ranking. It teaches the 5-hour class over Zoom, by appointment, on Wednesday at 6:00 PM and Saturday at 11:00 AM, and it charges $65 in cash or by card. The other four listings are providers that serve all five boroughs online: Coreway, 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course, at prices from $40.
That leaves a Bronx learner with a simple fork. You can stay with the neighborhood school and its two weekly slots, or take a live class from a provider with more dates and a lower price. Neither route requires you to leave the borough, because every class here runs online.
What the $25 difference buys
At $65, Bronx Driving School costs $25 more than the flat $40 charged by the three booking sites, which is more than 60% extra. Here is what each side publishes:
| Bronx Driving School | Coreway and the booking sites | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $65, cash or card | $40 flat at the booking sites; from $40 at Coreway |
| Class times | Wednesday 6:00 PM and Saturday 11:00 AM, by appointment | Tuesday and Thursday 5:00 PM, Saturday 1:00 PM |
| Spanish | Not stated | Select Sundays at 3:00 PM |
| Certificate | Delivery not stated; the page says it is valid for one year | Coreway: next business day, by mail or pickup; booking sites: issued after the class |
What the Castle Hill school offers is a local name, a Wednesday start that falls after a normal workday and the option to pay in cash. What it leaves out is the language of the class and the way the paper reaches you. Those two gaps are the reason it sits below the four live online providers in the table, and both are quick to settle with a phone call.
Teen drivers and their parents
Many Bronx learners are 16 or 17, and the rules are different for them. A junior permit holder can take a live class from age 16 but cannot use any online self-paced course. Coreway states that it accepts junior permits (DJ and MJ).
Drivers under 18 must also wait six months after receiving the permit before a road test, and bring the MV-262, signed by a parent or guardian, to certify 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset. The class is only one item on that list. Because the MV-278 stays valid for a year and has to be valid when you book, avoid taking the class so early that the year runs out before you are allowed to book.
What to have ready on class day
Schools must confirm who you are at enrollment and again during the course. Coreway asks for a plastic New York photo learner permit, or a paper permit together with a New York State photo ID, and checks the document on camera. Put it within reach before the class starts, and keep the full five hours free: Coreway says partial attendance earns no certificate, and it holds no quizzes or final exam.
Bronx Driving School’s page does not list what it asks students to show, so ask when you make the appointment.
Matching the class to your week
With so few dates in play, your free hours choose for you:
- Wednesday evening. Bronx Driving School starts at 6:00 PM, and the other four listings have no Wednesday class.
- Tuesday or Thursday after work. Coreway and the booking sites start at 5:00 PM.
- Saturday morning. Bronx Driving School runs at 11:00 AM. If you would rather start after lunch, the 1:00 PM class elsewhere fits.
- Sunday afternoon. Only the Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM, which means you must be comfortable learning in Spanish.
Remember that all of these are fixed dates. Book the seat first, then plan the rest of the day around it.
English and Spanish options
Coreway and the three booking sites teach in English on three fixed dates a week and add a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. Coreway’s office staff also speak Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish, which may help if a relative handles the paperwork. Bronx Driving School does not state the language of its class.
Whichever route you take, a Spanish class gives the same MV-278 as an English one.
From certificate to road test
On test day the examiner expects your physical permit, the original MV-278, a vehicle with valid registration, insurance and inspection, and a licensed driver to accompany you. If you do not have a car, you can rent one for the test through Coreway at $110 or through the booking sites at $115. Anyone who fails must wait at least 14 days before trying again.
You can book the appointment yourself with the DMV, online or by phone at 1-518-402-2100, or pay a school to do it: $20 or $70 rush at Coreway, $25 or $75 rush at the booking sites. The DMV’s road test page lists every requirement, and our comparison table shows the schools side by side.
