Five boroughs, one online class
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island all get the same class here: live, five hours, $40 flat. English classes run Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM. Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. You reserve a seat on the date you pick with a short form (name and phone number), and the team confirms the details with you.
What the site adds is structure. nyfivehourcourse.com keeps a page for each of the five boroughs next to its general articles, so a learner from the Bronx and a learner from Staten Island each land on a page written with their borough in mind. The whole site also exists in a full Spanish version.
Where your borough does matter
Because the class is online, your borough changes neither the schedule nor the price. It starts to matter at the next step. When you book a road test through the DMV scheduler, you choose among test sites near the ZIP code you enter, and that is where location counts.
If you would rather deal with a school in your own borough, our pages list the options for each one:
- Brooklyn: Coreway has two offices here, and Drive Rite, Image Driving School and Super Starz are also based in the borough.
- Queens: Totally Cool Driving School in Jamaica teaches a live virtual class, and Pre-Licensing Course LLC in Astoria offers an online course for adults 18 and older.
- Manhattan: New York Auto School and Grand Prix both run Zoom classes from Lexington Avenue offices.
- The Bronx: Bronx Driving School in Castle Hill runs Wednesday and Saturday sessions on Zoom.
- Staten Island: Super Starz in New Dorp and Alyaa Driving School on Clove Road both teach the class on Zoom.
Every live class on that list costs $40 or more. Only Pre-Licensing Course LLC’s online course, at a $38 offer price, comes in under the NY 5-Hour Course price.
Price, add-ons and the certificate
The class costs $40, and the certificate has no extra charge. The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class. Road test help is optional and listed separately: $25 for a standard appointment booking, $75 for a rush booking and $115 for a car for the road test.
Here is how a full set compares with Coreway:
| Class + standard booking + car | Total |
|---|---|
| NY 5-Hour Course ($40 + $25 + $115) | $180 |
| Coreway on a $40 date ($40 + $20 + $110) | $170 |
The $10 gap is small, and Coreway’s price rises by $10 on dates listed at $50. Coreway’s extra is lesson packages bundled with the class; NY 5-Hour Course’s is a flat price on every date.
Spanish-speaking learners
A Spanish class is the same state course and produces the same MV-278 as an English class. Here the Spanish option is a Sunday afternoon: select Sundays at 3:00 PM. The full Spanish version of the site lets you read everything, from the price to the road test add-ons, in Spanish. For a side-by-side look at who offers Spanish classes, see our comparison table.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
NY 5-Hour Course suits learners who like to read their borough’s page before choosing, and anyone who wants a flat $40 with a certificate that costs nothing extra. Parents booking for a teen will find the road test add-ons easy to price in advance.
Look elsewhere if you want to sit in a classroom, because Image Driving School is the only school in our ranking that teaches the class in person. Look elsewhere too if you need a weekday daytime slot. The two other booking sites in our top four, 5 Hour Class NYC and Take 5-Hour Course, share this schedule and price, so switching between the three changes the guidance you read, not the class details. The full ranking shows every option side by side.
What we like
- Flat $40 and no separate fee for the certificate
- Guidance written for Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island
- English and Spanish, each with a full version of the site
- Road test help: a car for the test at $115 and appointment booking at $25 or $75 rush
Keep in mind
- You can only join on posted dates, so book ahead
- Standard road test booking is usually 5 to 9 weeks out; the $75 rush option is usually 1 to 3 weeks
Our verdict
NY 5-Hour Course ranks third. The class, the $40 price and the booking steps are the same as at the other two booking sites, so the gap in score is small. What it emphasises is borough-by-borough guidance, which helps if you are not sure how the course fits your part of the city. Like its neighbours in the ranking, it asks you to book a seat on a posted date rather than start whenever you like.
Best for: Learners who want guidance matched to their own borough before booking
