How booking works: choose a date, reserve a seat
The site is built around a calendar. You open 5 Hour Class NYC, choose an upcoming class date and reserve a seat with a short form that asks for your name and phone number. The team then confirms the details with you.
The class is a live online session of 5 hours on a fixed weekly pattern. English classes run Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM, and Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM. It is a scheduled class, not a pre-recorded course, so you attend on the date you reserved and you block out the full five hours.
Because the class is online, the site serves learners in all five boroughs from the same schedule, whichever neighborhood you live in.
The $40 price and what sits outside it
The price is $40 flat, and the certificate carries no extra charge. In our ranking only the top four schools list $40 for a live class. Image Driving School is next at $45, and the rest run from $50 to $65.
Anything beyond the class is priced separately. The site sells road test help as three add-ons:
| Add-on | Price | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| Road test appointment booking, standard | $25 | Usually 5 to 9 weeks out |
| Road test appointment booking, rush | $75 | Usually 1 to 3 weeks out |
| Car for the road test | $115 | — |
Add the standard booking and the car to the class and the total is $180. Treat the add-ons as optional: you can also book your own road test with the DMV.
After the last minute of class
The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class. When the team confirms your seat, ask how and when the paper original will reach you, so you can plan your road test booking around it.
Once you hold the certificate, three DMV rules apply. It is valid for one year, it must still be valid on the day you book the road test, and you must bring the original, not a copy, to the test. The DMV course page has the official wording. Learners under 18 also face a wait of at least six months after receiving the permit before the test, and must bring a signed MV-262 showing 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset.
Articles, borough pages and a full Spanish version
Around the booking page, 5 Hour Class NYC publishes articles and borough guides for Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, and it has a complete Spanish version of the site. If you like to read before you buy, there is plenty here to read.
Our own borough pages come at the same question from a comparison angle. Queens, the Bronx and the other three boroughs each list the providers relevant to that area, including schools with an office nearby.
How it compares with the other two booking sites and Coreway
Two other sites in our top four list the same weekly schedule, the same $40 price and the same road test prices: NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. The class details match, so what separates them is how each site presents things. We list them separately because you may land on any one of them and want to check it against our scorecard.
Coreway runs the same weekly times but names Zoom, spells out mail and pickup options for the MV-278, and sells lesson packages. Its road test add-ons are $5 cheaper, and its $40 headline price comes with some $50 dates.
Choose 5 Hour Class NYC if you want a flat price, a short reservation form and plenty to read before you commit. Look elsewhere if you need a weekday daytime class, or a school that prints its certificate delivery options up front. The full ranking shows every alternative.
What we like
- Flat $40 with no extra charge for the MV-278
- Short reservation form: name and phone, then a confirmation
- Full Spanish version of the site, plus a Spanish class on select Sundays
- Articles and borough pages for all five boroughs
Keep in mind
- Classes run on scheduled dates, so you book a seat ahead
- The Spanish class runs on select Sundays only
Our verdict
5 Hour Class NYC takes second place by meeting almost every published criterion: a flat $40, a live online class, English and Spanish, three English dates a week and road test help. It trails Coreway by a tenth of a point because Coreway publishes more about certificate handling and sells lesson packages. Its class times, price and road test pricing are the same as at the other two booking sites, so read the order inside that group as a matter of editorial judgment rather than a measurable gap. It is a sensible first stop if you want the articles and borough pages open next to the booking form.
Best for: Learners who want a flat price and some reading before they book
