New York Auto School 5-Hour Course Review (2026)

New York Auto School ranks seventh with an 8.7 score. It is the only school outside our top four that publishes live Spanish classes, and at $65 it folds road test scheduling into the price.

8.7/10

A Midtown address and a Zoom class

New York Auto School has three offices: 369 Lexington Avenue, Suite 309, in Manhattan, plus locations in White Plains and Eastchester in Westchester. The 5-hour class itself runs live on Zoom, and the school’s page lists no classroom session for it. The Zoom link is sent to you ahead of class.

The school offers weekday and weekend classes. The pages we reviewed do not give specific days and times, so check the live schedule on the school’s 5-hour class page or call (800) 798-3818 before you plan. Students must be 16 or older.

English and Spanish, one of five

Language is where this school stands out. It teaches in English and lists Spanish classes (“Clases en Español”). Among the 13 providers we rank, only five publish live classes in both languages: the top four schools and New York Auto School. The other live classes in our ranking do not state a class language.

A Spanish class is the same state course and produces the same MV-278 as an English one. If Spanish is what you need and you want a Manhattan address rather than an online-only booking site, this is the school to start with outside our top four.

$65, with road test scheduling included

The school’s 2026 price list shows the class at $65. That is $25 above the flat $40 at 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course and equal to Bronx Driving School as the highest price in our ranking.

The school adds that road test scheduling comes free with the class. That changes the arithmetic. At 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course, a class plus a standard road test appointment booking costs $65 ($40 plus $25), and at Coreway on a $40 date it costs $60 ($40 plus $20). If you were going to pay for booking help anyway, the gap on paper shrinks to between $0 and $5. If you plan to book your own road test with the DMV, you are simply paying $25 more for the class.

One detail to ask about: the school says scheduling is free with the class, but the pages we reviewed do not say whether that means a standard or a rush slot, or how far out the first openings are. The DMV says its earliest slots usually run 3 to 5 weeks out, up to 10 weeks in busy periods, so ask what the school’s scheduling will realistically get you.

Certificate, cancellation and what to expect

The MV-278 is mailed to the address on your permit the next business day. Overnight, certified and regular mail options are available. Allow for the mail time when you plan, because the certificate must be valid on the day you book your road test. Because the certificate comes by mail, there is no trip to an office, unlike at Image Driving School, where you sign and collect it in person.

Cancellations follow a 24-hour rule: late cancellations are charged in full. Treat the class date as firm once you book it, and read the cancellation terms before paying.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

New York Auto School suits Spanish speakers who want a school with a Manhattan address, parents who prefer a certificate mailed to the permit address, and anyone who wants road test scheduling sorted at the same time as the class. Manhattan learners can compare it with Grand Prix on our Manhattan page.

Look elsewhere if price is the deciding factor. Coreway offers a live Zoom class from $40 with English and Spanish dates, and the full list is in the ranking. If you need certain evening times, note that this school does not publish them on the pages we reviewed.

What we like

  • English and Spanish classes
  • Certificate mailed to your permit address the next business day
  • Road test scheduling offered free with the class
  • Weekday and weekend sessions

Keep in mind

  • At $65 it is one of the two highest prices in our ranking
  • Exact class days and times are not listed on the pages we reviewed
  • Late cancellations are charged in full under its 24-hour policy

Our verdict

New York Auto School is one of only two schools outside the top four that state both English and Spanish classes, and it pairs that with next-business-day certificate mailing and free road test scheduling. It loses ground on price, at $25 above the flat $40 of the booking sites, and on schedule detail, since it describes its classes as weekday and weekend without listing times. If Spanish matters and you live or work near Lexington Avenue, it is a reasonable choice. Ask for the next available dates before you pay.

Best for: Manhattan learners who want a Spanish class and a mailed certificate
